My Socially Awkward Life

Welcome to my socially awkward life. I’m a mum of 3 boys, one blonde, one brunette and one red head (no we didn’t have a different milk man each time). Two are dyslexic (why they gave it a name no one can spell I will never know)! One can only see out of one eye. One is left handed. They’re all funny, like laugh so hard you’re face hurts funny. Two are autistic. It’s a hidden disability though I challenge you to guess from a photograph which two are.

This section of the blog is all about the trials and tribulations of autism. How it affects our boys, how it affects their family. From musings to facts it’s part of our  life and I hope you’d all like to find out more. Everyday I learn something new, no one ever gave me a handbook. I hope you enjoy in sharing my socially awkward journey of life and if you’d like to know more please check out autism awareness too.

Why I Took An Insta Break

Rachel From Raspberry Flavoured Windows

Do you ever feel that when the going got tough that well, the tough bit of you got up and f@cked off? So many times in my life I have been told I am strong. Even by complete strangers. How do you do it, they ask. The truth is I am not. I’m just a regular Joe, or in this case should it be a Joanna? It just so happens that I very good at looking outwardly strong. Inside can sometimes be a completely different matter. In my head I’m still the spotty, slightly chubby, flat chested 13 year old with poor self esteem and hair that no matter how much I wash it seems to be permanently greasy. And this is deep down the beginnings of why I took an Insta break.

What Will Happen To My Autistic Child After I Am Gone

What Will Happen To My Autistic Child After I Am Gone

The other day the very lovely Sharon from @the_arched_windows posted a very poignant picture on her Instagram story. It highlighted what many of us parents of special needs children have at the back of our minds 24 hours a day. It’s one of our first thoughts in the morning. And one of the last ones as we fall asleep. And although this affects all special needs parents when your child’s disability is hidden getting support is not always easy. How will they get help when many of the difficulties they face can’t be seen on the outside? My biggest fear in life is what will happen to my autistic child after I am gone?

Fuck Off Autism!

Fuck Off Autism!

Yeah, ya Bastard, why don’t you right royally fuck off! Believe me, I don’t say that lightly. Even my boys say it too! It’s not the diagnosis but the label that comes with it. They don’t want sympathy. Most of all and above all else they just want people to see them as normal. Which to me they are. They are my funny, infuriating, loving, giant pains in the ass just like every teenage kid. Can you imagine having to have a quiet word with staff where ever you go just to be on the safe side? Or what it’s like when college takes your child off role or sends them home because hey, they don’t matter? How about the whole debate on low functioning versus high functioning? Which are you? Do you fit into a category? Well why should they? Excuse the rant but fuck off autism!

Interior Design For The Autistic Home

Interior Design For The Autistic Home

Are you aware that we have seven senses? Most of us are familiar with the standard five of touch, hearing, sight, smell and taste. The two lesser known senses are movement (the vestibular System) and body awareness (the proprioceptive system). Well, what’s this got to do with interiors I hear you ask? Well,  I have three sons, two of whom are autistic and my main aim when designing our home was to make it a comfortable environment for us all. So I thought you might find it interesting to see how I approach interior design for the autistic home.

How Are You? Three Small Words

How are you? Three Small Words

I’m pretty sure we all have the same morning routine at work or at home. Get into the office, switch on the lights, the computers, switch off the telephone night answer service and then grab a cuppa to drink whilst you go through your emails. Or get up, get everyone through the bathroom, fed and watered before grabbing a coffee and checking you’re emails. More often than not the emails I receive start, ‘Hi Rachel, how are you?’ I think that’s pretty much standard isn’t it? I know I do it.  We all write the same three little words ourselves everyday without a thought don’t we? I wonder if we ever take a moment to really think what those three little words mean to the person receiving our emails when we write them down. Continue Reading…
