This post contains products that were used as part of a previous collaboration. Well here it is folks, meet the loo-tillity, a sensational makeover with Rust-Oleum. With a definite nod to the Victorian use of these once two very separate rooms I took inspiration from pantries of the time. More butlers than maid though, thus allowing it to be that little more refined.
The Moodboard
So here we have the mood board. I wanted to feature more marble than I have in the end result. I couldn’t find any within my budget for the shelving. That’s not to say I won’t at some point though. But I think you’ll agree that I have just about managed to hit my own brief! I love the idea of the dark red too. I’m finding myself drawn to colour at the moment. Something I’ve always shied away from historically. But I have to say muddy, earthy shades are really calling to me at the moment.
Wood & Cupboard Paint
And this red is no exception. It has just enough redness to be bold but an underlying earthy tone that knocks it back so it’s not too in your face. Isn’t it gorgeous? It’s called Valentina by Rust-Oleum in the Bathroom Wood and Cabinet Paint (Matt finish). And oh my word, this is hands down the nicest paint I’ve worked with. It covers perfectly, being incredibly highly pigmented. It also gives the most beautiful finish. Almost brush stroke free in fact. And it’s incredibly hardwearing too. After leaving it for 7 days to fully cure before using the room I can tell you that it’s been scrubbed daily and is standing up to the very hardworking room that it is.
The Wall Paint
I also used the same shade in the Wall & Ceiling Paint too. And for once it was exactly the same colour and level of sheen as the wood and cupboard paint. So many times I have painted rooms and when you finish even though the wood and wall paint say they are the same colour and finish somehow they look different. No, no, no, this is not the case however with Rust-Oleum. It’s a perfect match made in heaven. BTW! The under cupboard walls were originally bare brick so I plastered them to make the room feel a little less rustic.
The Ceiling Paint
Let’s not forget the ceiling here! I always find white’s the hardest colour to choose, don’t you? There’s such subtle differences from one to another that you think it wouldn’t matter too much but getting the wrong white can totally make a scheme feel off. It has to compliment the main colour and not compete with it. So I was delighted to find that Chalk White Bathroom Wall & Ceiling paint. It’s got to be one of the most versatile whites I’ve come across. It literally goes with every colour imaginable. And it only took 1 coat of paint to do the ceiling too!
The finish is only as good as the base coat
You cannot get a great finish on bare wood however if you do not prep properly. I used kiln dried redwood for my panelling but as you can see above it is knotty. So to stop those pesky knots from spoiling the finish I used Zinsser B-I-N Aqua. It primes, seals, blocks stains and locks in problem odours, whilst also expertly sealing knots and sap streaks. It’s a game changer. It adheres so well with the wood, almost becoming part of it and the top coat sticks like glue. It’s quick to use too. First I dabbed each knot with it followed by a single coat all over. It’s brilliant stuff and almost odour free too.
So there we have it. The Loo-Tillity is complete and I’m already itching to go again. Which room do you think I should tackle next? Oh and stay tuned for a cost breakdown post coming very soon.
