We wouldn’t be at the start of a New Year without a post dedicated to the upcoming trends for the home in the months ahead of us. Every year I write one and well I have to say this is my favourite one yet. You all know by now that the word ‘trend’ sends shivers down my spine when it comes to interiors and well ‘hurrah’ this year there’s no sign of what colour metallic you should be using, pineapples nor peacocks or any birds flamingo or otherwise for that matter! This coming year is a breath of fresh air! And so without further ado, here’s my interior design trend predictions for 2022.
But before we spurt ahead I always like a quick check back on last years predictions first. To see if I got any of them right!! And well I think I was pretty spot on. Although last year I did insert ‘movements’ for ‘trends’ which I think has a better ring to it. It doesn’t feel as much about what brands tell us to buy instead of them listening to what we’re asking for. So let’s stay in that vein shall we, and think not about consumerism lead design but what actually suits us. And don’t get me started on Pantone’s colour of the year Very Peri . ‘Displaying a carefree confidence and a daring curiosity that animates our creative spirit’, my arse:-)
Vintage And Second hand

Which leads nicely on to second hand and vintage. Demand is up but production is down. Globally we are not way out of the woods when it comes to getting back on our feet when it comes to retail. Having run a manufacturing business abroad and the associated infuriatingly annoying essential addition of importing that comes with it I can tell you there is way more involved than you think. The minute Covid hit manufacturing all over the world stopped. And in turn shipping lines reduced the amount of container ships on the water at any one given time.

You Can’t have the queen if you don’t also have the king that is Man With A Hammer
This resulted in container costs sky rocketing as manufacturing slowly started to recover. Though with competition increasing for less space on container ships this had the knock on effect of shipping prices sky rocketing like I’ve never seen in nearly 20 years. Add in the fuel cost hike and well it’s going to take a long time to recover. What used to take us 12 weeks from manufacturing a container load in Indonesia to it being received into Southampton would probably have doubled. And that would be completely out of my hands, there is no way unless you are a huge (and I’m talking massive) company that the shipping lines do anything at all to speed things up. You just wait and wait until you’re given a slot. And so more and more people are looking towards online marketplaces, with the added benefit that you get a unique piece for your home that’s actually there right in front of you with no waiting times.
Recycling And Upcycling

Upcycling at its best with RelovedMCR
In turn this will create a boom in the recycling movement. Already popular I think this movement will continue to grow in 2022. People have had more time on their hands in their homes and have taken time to learn new skills like upcycling. It links back to the second hand and vintage movement perfectly too. i mean, it’s wonderful finding one off pieces on marketplaces but they’re not always the exact colour you’re after. And so a lick of paint can transform the mundane. Do I implore you though, try not to paint a true antique and instead let the beauty of the wood shine through. Just because you can paint something doesn’t mean you should. Oh, and remember to sell the bits you no longer love too. One man’s rubbish is after all another man’s treasure.
Flexible Living, Multi Functional Spaces and Dual Function Furniture

Another key trend which we’ve seen steadily growing with no sign of letting up is flexible living. More than ever our homes are still working hard for us with dual purpose rooms. I don’t know about you but my home previously felt relatively spacious prior to 2020. But having spent the last 2 years mostly cooped up in it with 4 other adults it feels smaller by the day. And so now there’s a movement towards our rooms multitasking but without everything being on show. Think desks that also function as a wardrobe. Outside kitchens for celebrations and gatherings (bring your own booze :-)) A quiet space as well as a play room. Getting the work/life balance has never been harder but brands are cottoning on and helping us to come up with solutions.
Sustainable Living and Design

Also this year, thankfully, brands will finally be standing up and taking responsibility for their own designs and actions. We the consumer have shouted and they have finally listened with more and more sustainable products coming to the market. And where once (and I’m sorry, this is only my opinion) ‘sustainable’ equalled ‘fugly’ now brands are not only creating incredible designs but ones that are truly innovative and beautiful too. I one hundred percent applaud this and hope that you like me will seek out the sustainable option moving forwards.

Texture And Shape

Sexy curves throughout, texture in abundance and a whole lot more, you have to see the home of The Smurf House
Texture and shape will also be big for 2022. Think curved and circular furniture upholstered in rich textural fabrics. I think there is a connection here with our busier homes too. Curves help a room to flow, taking the edges off it. A room somehow feels less full even though there is the same amount of furniture in it. And in a multitude of different soft furnishings in boucles, velvets, silks etc and you have the recipe for a room that will soothe the cockles of even the most brain fried multi tasking room.
So there we have it. My Interior Design Trend Predictions For 2022. What do you think? Do you agree? What would you add if you could? Or which one would you like to try? Let me know in the comments section below x
